In the Josef Fritzl movie retelling presented by Girl in the Basement, Don fools Irene into thinking that Sarah, having ran away, sent her youngest son to Don and Irene, convincing Irene to take care of the boy with Don. Like most movies or series adaptations of true crime stories, Girl in the Basement is a somewhat milder version of the real events on which it was based (as difficult as that may be to believe, given the chilling nature of Judd Nelson's Don Cody). It's this horrific premise that's made Girl in the Basement such a talking point, but the now-infamous Elisabeth and Josef Fritzl movie adaptation isn't anywhere near as stomach-churning as the real events it's based on. In reality, Don holds Sara captive for decades, torturing and raping her, causing Sara to give birth to several children. In order to cover his tracks, Don concocts a story for his wife, Irene, about Sarah running away. Girl in the Basement is about Sara, a teenager who gets imprisoned by her father, Don, in their basement. Girl in the Basement is part of Lifetime's "Ripped From the Headlines" collection, and while it's not a true crime docuseries or documentary, it is based on a real case from 2008. 2021's Girl in the Basementis one of the most shocking movies released so far this decade, but what makes the movie truly horrifying is that it's based on true events - the Josef Frtizl case. ![]()
